WLNF is home to the state’s chapter of Press Forward, a national initiative created to strengthen communities by supporting and reinvigorating local news. This campaign, led by the MacArthur Foundation, has raised more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive.
Backed by national and local expertise, technical assistance, and start-up funding, the Wyoming Local News Fund is raising matching funds to ensure the residents of Equality State will have access to the local news and information it needs now — and for generations to come. Grantee Spotlight: Newcastle News Letter Journal
The News Letter Journal has been the local newspaper for Weston County since 1890, covering news, sports and community events, and providing them with the information they need to be active and engaged citizens. NLJ has been recognized as one of the top community newspapers in Wyoming, and the nation as a whole, consistently winning awards by the Wyoming Press Association and the National Newspaper Association while bringing important news and information to the community it serves. Contact the NLJ by emailing editor@newslj.com.
In September 2024, the News Letter Journal was awarded a $100,000 grant from the national coalition Press Forward “to strengthen communities by reinvigorating local news.” The funding, to be distributed in two yearly allotments of $50,000, will support the organization's general operations.
The News Letter Journal was one of 204 applicants that applied for $20 million of funding, and was the only Wyoming outlet to receive a grant.
“This grant recognized that it was important that the rural parts of the country like Weston County be well represented by an active press that challenges government and ensures accountability to the people,” said News Letter Journal Publisher Bob Bonnar, in an article published by the NLJ.
